Last Friday night, I was invited to attend the Wayne County Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner at the Kuhlman Center located in Richmond, Indiana.  This event was a wonderful opportunity to highlight the community partners and give out awards for outstanding service.  Chamber President & CEO Amy Oler Holthouse is doing an amazing job evident by the room filled with over 500 people.

Watching leaders from education, business and non-profit cross the stage for recognition of their involvement in bettering the community, I was reminded of how important it is for City leadership to realize that they are not alone in their endeavors to promote and improve their community.

Having worked in and around local government for several years, administrations can become overwhelmed with the amount of work there is to be done in advancing the City.  Beyond the walls of City Hall lies a whole army of people ready to get to work … and they are doing it every day.

Government cannot do everything!  Many times, complaints about what the City isn’t doing can delay progress.  Businesses and organizations need to step up and say: “How can we help!” Or – even better – find opportunities and take the initiative.  Additionally, City Administrations need to capture the energy in their community and find ways to work together.

There are plenty of examples out there of successful city-building that has happened as a result of citizens deciding to step up.

I had the privilege of spending some time with Governor Mike Pence – who was keynote for the evening.  He gave the audience a wonderful challenge:  “In the next week, call someone you know and ask them to consider Richmond, Indiana – to live, start or relocate a business or visit!”

It is EVERYONE’S job to help a community thrive and grow – not just the City employees.  Times are tough in local government and they need everyone’s help.  Don’t be complacent!  Be a part of the solution …munilogx can help in creating a plan for this type of outreach as well as facilitating the process!
