What happens when a lady named Andrea, mother of two young girls has a dream of owning her own home?  She connects with Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity, they coordinate a Women’s Build program and @netlogx (Audrey Taylor) organizes a team called Hardhats @2017WomenBuildHouses.  And Andrea’s dream becomes a reality, however not without a great deal of sweat equity and training on home-ownership.

Hardhats @2017WomenBuildHouses raised over $4000 and seven women hammered in nail heads, caulked and painted the outside of Andrea’s home.  The overall women’s build program raised over $125,000 for women like Andrea who work hard to fulfill their dream of being a homeowner. Please check out her inspiring story.

Yes, I had heard of Habit for Humanity.  However, I must admit I didn’t know much about the women’s build program.  As I mentioned above, Andrea and other ladies like her complete a rigorous program after they apply and are selected.  Chosen Habitat homeowners pay a modest down payment, invest 300 hours of “sweat equity,” which includes construction of their home, and are responsible for 0% interest monthly mortgage payments and home maintenance. Through the homeownership education program and financial counseling, Habitat homeowners are given the tools to be successful in this life-changing endeavor.

Hardhats @2017WomenBuildHouses team was lucky enough to meet Andrea and work alongside her as we all completed our tasks. I must admit I wasn’t thrilled about climbing up scaffolding and ladders to paint the outside of her home.  However, as I watched her work and saw the pride she possessed. I quickly shed my inhibitions and worked hard to help her reach her dream.  Andrea picked her paint color for the front trim of her house while we were there. And I was lucky enough to paint it for her along with @netlogx.  I loved seeing the smile on her face when the trim was painted. It was a great sign of affirmation for me that she was pleased with her choice. Before we left, she gave us a tour of her home. As we were walking around her new home which was going to be drywalled next, she was beaming with pride. This house will soon become her beautiful home which will allow her and her girls to make lasting family memories.

I encourage everyone to volunteer to participate in a build for Habitat for Humanity. Their mission is: “Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.”
