What do people think about you? What do you want people to think about you?

These questions, and more, were tackled by Trevor Yager at a recent Indy Chamber Forward event.

Trevor founded his own company (TrendyMinds) while still a student in college. Today, that company has grown from a small screen printing and embroidery company, into a multifaceted digital branding, advertising, and web design company (among other things). Being heavily invested and headquartered in Indianapolis, the Indy Chamber would have been hard pressed to find a more appropriate speaker for this event.

And yet, the advice that Mr. Yager shared with the group was simple and attainable.

My the three (3) biggest takeaways were to:

  1. Be honest
  2. Be consistent
  3. Be cautious with social media

In this case, honesty is about much more than just telling the truth. Honesty is about being true to yourself and sharing that with others. Don’t sell yourself out for anybody.

Consistency is just that. Nobody will ever think positively about you if you aren’t consistent. Be consistent in how you treat others, in how you present yourself, and in what you believe.

And of course, social media. Everything you do and say online is public. Treat every post and comment as if it were going to end up on the front page of the newspaper. Your future clients, employers, and coworkers will be looking you up.

The great news about this is – it’s something we can all do! Think about what you want and think about what you represent, then tell that story. Be true to yourself, be consistent in what you tell others, and keep inappropriate photos off social media.
