Merriam Webster dictionary defines wellness as “the quality or state of being in good health, especially as an actively sought goal.” I like that the definition includes “an actively sought goal.” Wellness is not something that happens overnight, nor is it a linear process. Wellness takes time.
I’ve discovered that sometimes finding a wellness routine can be a trial-and-error process. Just because meditation works to calm and center one person does not mean it will work for me. For some, running provides an opportunity to clear the head, while others benefit more from repeating a positive mantra or even reading.
After many yoga classes, meditation sessions, knitting, and running, I discovered that these wellness routines weren’t for me. I am fortunate enough to live close to City Park, one of the largest urban parks in the country. During the day, I try to make time to walk in the park. Some days, I benefit most from just strolling and people watching, while on other days, I walk with my headphones in and listen to a podcast.
There is an incredible sculpture garden within the park, and on the weekends, I love walking in the garden and listening to music. For me, there really is nothing more calming.
However, as much as I believe “me time” is important, I also fully maintain that surrounding oneself with family and friends is just as important. My family is exceptionally close. My immediate family includes my mother and father, my two sisters, their husbands, and my two nephews.
Once a week, my family gathers at my parent’s house for dinner. These dinners typically happen on Mondays, which, if you’re from New Orleans, like me, you’ll know that means it’s red beans and rice for dinner. Sitting at that round table, surrounded by people I love, telling stories, and laughing is one of the most precious parts of my wellness routine.
If there’s anything to take away from my blog, it’s to remain patient with yourself. Finding a wellness routine that works for you will take time. There will be ups and downs, and it is easy to get frustrated when you feel nothing is working. Be kind to yourself.
