What Is Cybersecurity?
In short, cybersecurity is the practice of keeping information systems and data safe from digital attacks. Many of these threats target sensitive data that, if it falls into the wrong hands, can have significant consequences for your customers, employees, and bottom line. Because digital attacks can come from a slew of different places, cybersecurity takes many forms. It might have to do with something as simple as two-factor user/password authentication or as complicated as revamping your business’s digital infrastructure.
Why Cybersecurity Should Be a Priority
Cybercrime is only getting more common. In fact, the University of North Georgia reported in 2018 that 64% of surveyed businesses experienced some sort of cyberattack. These threats are common, and companies that do little to combat them run the risk of losing money, customers, and the public’s trust. Plus, getting back on your feet can cost time and money that you wouldn’t be spending otherwise. Prevention is always the best medicine when it comes to cybersecurity—defend yourself against attacks before they begin.
Quick Tips for Maintaining Your Digital Health
We can all agree that cybersecurity is essential. But what can you do to protect your data? Maintaining your digital health is easier than you may think! Here are a few ideas for staying secure:
- Concentrate on Culture—Cybersecurity is an all-hands-on-deck kind of job. All your team members need to be aware of cyber threats and be ready to watch for them. To get your employees on board, focus on creating a culture of security. For example, promote strong passwords, putting locks on sensitive information, and watching entry and exit doors to the office.
- Introduce New Training—Not everyone is well-versed in data safety. Consider implementing new training to get your team members on the same page about phishing emails, file security, and potential threats.
- Passwords Are Key—It can’t be stressed enough—strong passwords are crucial to information safety! Don’t use the same password for everything, and make sure it’s strong enough so it’s not easily guessed. Be wary of posting information on social media that could give away answers to common security questions.
- Always Be Aware—If you see something, say something. If you notice odd things that could be security risks, take them seriously. It’s always better to check out a potential threat and have it be nothing than to be lax about security.
