In 2017, I adopted an Australian Shepherd puppy. If you know anything about Australian Shepherds, you know how furry, smart, and active they can be. He has been the joy of my life and one of the few constants in an ever-changing life.

But most importantly, he has provided a much-needed respite throughout the work week. Being an Aussie, he requires multiple walks per day and provides me with my excuse to take 45 minutes to walk him during my lunch break. Having an active dog like him also provides me with a pacesetter while running and hiking. Not to mention how much dogs improve your mental and emotional health throughout the day.

According to the CDC, pets have been shown to decrease blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and symptoms of PTSD. In addition, dogs can increase opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities, better cognitive function in older adults, and more opportunities to socialize. In a world of increasing isolation and working from home, the benefits of pets have never been more important.

So, this is my ode to my dog and how much I love and appreciate all he does for me. Of course, the decision to adopt a pet should never be taken lightly, but I couldn’t recommend a pet anymore if you are looking for a companion who can provide so many health benefits.
