Spring is finally here… which means it is time to get outside! Whether it’s a walk around the neighborhood or just sitting outside and enjoying a good book, I hope everyone gets a chance to take advantage of the sunshine and warmer weather.

Personally, I am excited to ditch the treadmill and get back to runs in my local park. Over the past couple of years, supported by the netlogx Wellness Program, I’ve consciously tried to make better food choices, be more aware of portion sizes, and increase my activity level. As part of my effort, I started running and have since become an enthusiastic (albeit slow) runner and walker.

Running has been a great way for me to focus on wellness and stay active while getting outside and enjoying nature.

Naturally, I was thrilled when netlogx introduced a reimbursement program for wellness related expenses. The reimbursement is a great motivation to run that extra race, try out a new activity, or revisit the gym. This year, I am using the program to pay for my 2017 Mini Marathon registration.

I like to use Mini training runs as time to relax and unwind. Life gets so busy and I’ve found that setting aside time during the week to get my runs in has been extremely beneficial both for physical and mental health.Sara j 3

Runs are also a fun way to see your neighborhood and your city in different ways. It’s easy to gloss over details when you are driving by but exploring on foot allows more time to really examine your surroundings. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the nature, history, and culture in my neighborhood. Finding hidden treasures nearby is fascinating and helps me feel more connected to my local community.

Last summer, I stumbled across a unique art installation on the Pleasant Run Trail. Consisting of a stationary bike and colorful spinning discs, the Ka-Bike-O-Scope is a fun addition to the neighborhood that I would not have discovered if I hadn’t been spending time outside.

I don’t discover new treasures on every run, but even on short park runs I enjoy watching the changing seasons, seeing the antics of the squirrels, and enjoying the beautiful Sunken Gardens. Even on quiet days, there is always something new to see.

Whatever your preferred activity, I would encourage everyone to get outside and explore. You may be surprised at what you find!
