If you ever have the opportunity to attend The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Masked Ball, I strongly encourage you to go. Nick and I had the distinct pleasure of attending as guests of Ice Miller though our good friend, Myra Selby.  UNCF is a premier fundraising gala and a major social event, focusing on raising public awareness and large corporate and individual donations to support deserving students through UNCF.  Hosted by a diverse group of corporate sponsors and local businesses, it involves celebrities, dignitaries, civic leaders, volunteers, public officials, alumni and others who support UNCF’s mission of investing in better futures for us all by getting students to and through college.

UNCF was founded in 1944 to help more African American students attend and graduate from college.  Since then, they have helped to more than double the number of minorities attending college. With a motto of “A mind is a terrible thing to waste, but a wonderful thing to invest in,”® UNCF provides a great way to invest your time or money in better futures for young people in Indiana and around the country. A few local statistics include:

  • 300 Indiana students receive scholarships from UNCF, totaling $405,000
  • $712,000 total dollars raised by most recent Indianapolis Masked Ball

Andrea Neely, Regional Development Director, Indianapolis and Kimberly Bostic, Development Director, Indianapolis are amazing women who exemplify the meaning of diversity.  Although Indiana doesn’t have a Historically Black College or University (HBCU); our state raises a large amount of money and supports our own citizens in attending the many wonderful State schools here in Indiana.  For more on scholarships go here.

Attending this event was an opportunity for Nick and me to support an organization practicing what we at netlogx call Diverse by Design thinking. It is clear that a workforce made up of a wide variety of talents and perspectives makes the ability to approach, understand, and solve complex problems more successful. At netlogx, we open our doors and invite folks to take off their masks and provide unique ideas and share a different way of thinking. Our support of events like UNCF and other organizations striving to make our workplaces look like our world is one way to keep us moving these goals forward. Specifically for UNCF – by investing in our youth which provide opportunities to attend colleges and universities is one important and crucial factor towards having not only a diverse workplace but a diverse world.
