Have you ever woken up cold and hungry and wondered where you are going to sleep tonight? That is the reality for many people in this world. There are some amazing people across this Earth who devote their lives to reduce the number of people who answer “YES” to that question. October 2 is World Habitat Day 2017. Imagine someone telling you, “You Get a House”, when you have moved from friend to friend or family member to family member without a place to call “home”. Every year Habitat for Humanity joins partners around the world to rededicate the organization to recognizing the basic right of everyone to adequate shelter. Habitat for Humanity asks everyone to join together as one global network in communicating the message that every one of us deserves the opportunity for a better future, and that a decent place to live can remove barriers to opportunity, health and success that might have been part of a family’s life for years, and in many cases for generations.
You might be asking yourself what you can do. There are so many things you can do.
- Don’t have time? Donate resources.
- Don’t have money? Donate time.
- Don’t have building skills? Offer to take lunch to a team building on-site one day
- Don’t have any of the above? Plan ahead and identify a way to get involved in a local chapter of Habitat for Humanity for 2018.
There are so many amazing ways to contribute to making home ownership a reality. The need does not go away from one year to the next. I have been fortunate enough to have been involved in two women builds, that is right, solid, well built homes, managed by teams of women!! It takes about 6 hours to participate and how amazing it is to attend the dedication where a group of people each took 6 hours out of their lives to contribute and the end result is an amazing, new home for a mother and her children to have a safe place to rest their heads at night, every night. Six hours out of an estimated 85 years of life – 6 hours out of 744,600 hours in your life is pretty insignificant but can have a profound impact on someone else.
